Berdirinya Badan Keamanan Rakyat Laut (BKR Laut ) pada tanggal 10 September 1945 menjadi tonggak penting bagi kehadiran Angkatan Lautdi lingkungan Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia yang diproklamirkan pada tanggal 17 Agustus 1945. Kehadiran BKR Laut ini tidak terlepas dari peran tokoh-tokoh bahariawan yang pernah bertugas di jajaran Koninklijke Marine selama masa penjajahan Belanda dan Kaigun pada zaman pendudukan Jepang.
